Herman Miller's Celle Chair Scores Bronze from IDEA
June 30, 2006   [E-mail Page]  [Print Page]

The Celle chair from Herman Miller, Inc., received a Bronze award from the 2006 Industrial Design Excellence Award (IDEA) competition--an event co-sponsored by BusinessWeek and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) to annually celebrate the best product designs of the year.

Judging criteria for each entry focused on five areas of industrial design excellence: design innovation, benefit to the user, benefit to the client or business, ecological responsibility, and appropriate aesthetics and appeal.

Designed by Jerome Caruso, the Celle chair's defining feature is Cellular Suspension, a new concept first proposed by the designer, using pliable molded polymer "cells" and loops to responsively flex with the body's movements throughout the day.

Celle also follows Herman Miller's Design for the Environment (DfE) methodology, using the Cradle to Cradle protocols first developed by the team at McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry. The chair contains 33 percent recycled content and is 99 percent recyclable.

Exceptional design, intelligent functionality, and innovation ultimately led the jury to select winners from more than 1,500 entries, with 27 Gold, 39 Silver, and 42 Bronze awards.
